Revealing his plans - Southend United chairman Justin Rees (Image: Daniel Hambury)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United chairman Justin Rees has stressed the importance of the women’s team to the football club.

Rees has been a big backer of the Shrimpers’ female side since his arrival at Roots Hall.

And he has now revealed plans for Blues to have a semi-professional women’s side in five years’ time.

“I’m a huge supporter of the women’s team as hopefully most people know and I’ve made that point consistently since I first came on the scene,” Rees told the club's YouTube channel

“We start with the mentality of treating it like one club.

“We want to represent the whole city, not half of it.

“We will build slowly and organically with the women’s side but it was about having the same events, wearing the same kit and sharing the same website to really integrate as one club.

“The men and the women will have different growth stories and timings on things.

“We do have a five year plan to eventually have a semi-pro women’s team but lets start by building the foundations and supporting them.”

Southend United's ladies side are currently top of the Eastern Region Women's Football League Division One South standings.
