Blues boss Brown not a fan of new plans to punish divers

SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown insists retrospective punishments will not rid football of diving.

Usual misguided comments from Brown. Let's blame the referees for not being "good enough" to spot the increasingly accomplished cheating rather than the players and coaches who are instrumental in the cheating.

Not surprised he likes the controversy for providing talking points as he seems to earn a good part of his living talking about such - although why anyone would be remotely interested in his opinion is a bit of a mystery to me.

Of course not. There are fouls, there are dives and there are a whole load of other things in between.,

You are right, it's a massive minefield. In a split second, the ref has to decide whether to give a penalty, wave play on as a good tackle or book the player for diving. I wouldn't want to have to make the choice.

As the punishment for diving gets harsher, will we see less diving and players trying to stay on their feet to avoid the option of punishment for an alleged dive (refs won't always get it right)

If a player feels he can't go down and tries staying on his feet, the chance of a scoring opportunity goes begging and there's no penalty at the end of it either

People in football fear change. Football managers don't want an improvement in the quality of officiating because referees are an ideal scapegoat for any mistakes that the manager has made.

"“Are we going to go back to the game it happened in and change the score-line retrospectively too?"

No, we're not Phil.

“Part of the reason we all love football is the talking points,” said Brown.

“In the stands and in the pubs people are questioning referees, the players and the manager and I don’t think that should be taken away.

It won't be taken away Phil.

Whilst it happens in the FL it is far more prevalent in the PL were the financial rewards are far greater. Both the Manchester clubs 'won' very dubious penalties in recent weeks. If we had been on the wrong end of those decisions Brown may well have a different opinion.
Whilst not a perfect answer to this problem for me it is certainly worth trying in case it can help reduce this problem.

Fining the guilty club/player and subsequent suspension is highly desirable, but what about the club that's been cheated?
I suggest that each time a player is found unquestionably to have cheated, one goal be deducted from the offending team's final score.

I'm interested in his opinion - partly because he is manager of our football club and partly because of the experience gained from his long career in football. Hope that helps to solve the mystery.
