Bloody Kids

Richard Hearn

Coach⭐
Just noticed in the Radio Times that tonight at 10.00 BBC4 is showing the Stephen Poliakoff film "Bloody Kids" which, if my aging memory serves me correctly, has many scenes shot in and around Roots Hall on a match day. A bit of nostalgia for we elderly coves and a chance for the youngsters to see what Roots Hall (and fans) looked like in the late seventies.

Top man.
Bit flash. Obviously not that grim up north.

I remember seeing this film a long time ago. Don't get BBC4 here. Anybody willing to record it for me on DVD?

Grim can't (so much for flash).

not just Roots Hall but Southend and the immediate area - the high street, the precinct / Victoria Circus, Chalkwell Park, the seafront and Southend Hospital

Great car chase type scene down the High Street and in Vic Circus. Also scene in Rossi's on seafront.

Most of the Southend United shots are early on don't miss them. Will try this time to see who we were playing. You might even see yourself.

Watch out for Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra from Only Fools & Horses) and Gary Holton from Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

I think some of the other Seafront scenes were filmed on Canvey.

Plenty of copies of this film usually available for a few quid on eBay.

Couldn't beleive it when I saw this post I was at Southend tech when this was filmed, a group of us were asked to help out as extras!!.

If I remember right I can just be glimpsed behind the coloured lad running down the stairs on the bus (that was on Canvey I think) and at the ground when the crowd are leaving as someone gets stabbed.
Saw the film when it first came out on vhs must be 27 yrs ago

Anyone remember Zhivagos??

Just seen the Roots Hall bits. Shows fans coming out of the old exit gate from the north bank on the north east corner. This was when there was turnstiles in that corner before there was a ticket office there. In the background you can see the old south bank when it were all fields, I mean terracing.

Mel Smith as the bouncer in the Discotheque, very funny.
Think somebody has already mentioned the odd 5 mile detour the police car takes to get to the hospital.

Bit of a strange film really. But not as strange as the bird whistlers that were on for an hour before this film started. What was that all about.

Just finished watching poor 70's play but viewed just to see where they filmed that included: Roots Hall, Rossis on the Seafront, Vic Plaza, Kursaal, High St, Hospital + numerous other locations around Southend.

Gutted I Missed that.... I was in the North bank that game ( one of my 1st games) I can remember them filming as the game finished 0.0 draw I think ... at the time we thought it was a good old punch up outside

Vs. Bury, Gordon Taylor doing alot of backpasses to Neville Southall I recall.

I too was in the North Bank, used to move around in those days.

I recall that Richard Beckinsale had been cast in the lead role in the play, but he died during filming. As a result a whole load of the secnes had to be re-shot. This could all of course, be some weird dream.

You're right - there's a comment on IMDb that says during filming he was seen boozing in the Peter Boat looking a bit bloated and was dead very soon after.
