Best Unashamed Pop Song

Slipperduke

The Camden Cad
I'm just playing about with this www.blogmusik.net thing and I'm having a bit of an 80s moment.

As I type this I'm listening to the desperately uncool Nik Kershaw sing about trees, rivers and holes in the ground in his seminal work 'The Riddle'.

Later, I'm going to listen to Ultravox dance with tears in their eyes.

What's your favourite ever pop song? The kind of thing that you could play to both your parents and your kids and not feel like you were taking either group into uncharted territory?

I think "Strawberry Fields"/"Penny Lane" is the best pop single ever released - it appeals to young and old alike, it's cool to like it but you don't need to be a music hipster to appreciate it.
It's just as good as it gets.

If you're going fro 80's stuff you just cannot beat "Love is Full of Wonderful Colour" by The Icicle Works - or it may be called "Love Is a Wonderful Colour". Unless you trump it with "Thank You" by The Pale Fountains.

It's a head-to-head between:

Take on Me - A-Ha.  A few minutes of total pop gold that make my spirits soar every time I hear it.

vs.

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson.  A genius, at the height of his powers, that had the world of music at his feet, crafting a song of soulful power and beauty.  Proves the old adage that the higher you fly, the farther you fall...

Either of those, although Mr. Kershaw's output in the early 80s (The Riddle, I Won't Let the Sun...) was truly excellent as well.

Hmmm Im thinking Joe Dolce's 'ahhh suddupa yer face'...allows the young to be risque...and the old to chortle with merriment.
So to me this is the perfect centre ground for both age groups.

Nik Kershaw..."frogmen in stripey trousers" etc etc....he was a massive crack head as it turned out.

I'll go for Street Life by The Crusaders - still a classic and it appeals to everyone across the board. I used to play it at the end of my house sets when I was DJing.

My 80s favourites....

Rio, Hungry like the Wolf - Duran Duran.

Propaganda - The Duel.

Fade to grey - Visage.

New Life - Depeche Mode.

E=MC^2 - Big Audio Dynamite.

Cars / Are friends electric? - Gary Numan.

Excellent call by MtS for 'Billie Jean'. Pop genius.

'Material 'Girl' by Madonna also falls in to that category.

For a more recent one I'll doff my cap to 'Crazy In Love' by Beyonce Knowles.

I think 'Open your heart' is Madonnas best to date.....

I'd ask for it back then.

Not really a pop fan, but I'd probably go for the Jackson Five and ABC.

Favourite 80's songs -

Edge of Heaven - Wham!

Girls on Film - Duran Duran

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves

I love the 80's

Good call, I would go for a Beatles single, but my choice would be Hey Jude / Revolution, showing both sides of Lennon & McCartney.

A few of my favourites:-

2) Whole of my heart - ABC
3) Stepping out - Joe Jackson

All 3 are total guilty pleasures.

Surely "Elephant Stone" or "Sally Cinnamon" are the best Roses pop moments?
