I recently downloaded a great music collection containing every UK number one single from 1952-2007. Obviously, there's copious amounts of crap in there, but I was stunned to find some truly incredible sequences of classic singles that hit the top spot in succession. These were my two favourite sequences:
1964:
'House of the Rising Sun' - The Animals
'It's All Over Now' - Rolling Stones
'A Hard Day's Night' - The Beatles
'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' - Manfred Mann
'Have I the Right?' - The Honeycombs
'You Really Got Me' - The Kinks
'I'm Into Something Good' - Herman's Hermits
'Pretty Woman' - Roy Orbison
'Always Something There to Remind Me' - Sandie Shaw
1982:
'Land of Make Believe' - Bucks Fizz
'Oh Julie' - Shakin' Stevens
'The Model' - Kraftwerk
'A Town Called Malice' - The Jam
'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' - Tight Fit
'Seven Tears' - The Goombay Dance Band
'My Camera Never Lies' - Bucks Fizz
'Ebony & Ivory' - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder (always been a big favourite, as I'm sure everyone would expect)
'A Little Peace' - Nicole
'House of Fun' - Madness
I can imagine that some musical snobs might scoff at my second selection, but I believe its main purpose is to disprove the fallacy that Bucks Fizz were just a Eurovision one hit wonder.
Anybody else got any favourite years for Number Ones?
