Manager
Football is a team game

Sturrock made a choice of who was better for penaltys and called it correct

Smith i have supported you when fans have slagged you off

Not shaking Dan's hand means one thing to me - I hope you never pull on a southend shirt again

As i said at the beginning its a team game

Bentley for England! Defo starter for Exeter in my book, Smith should be dropped for his attitude to being subbed!

Another stick for supportersfans to hit Smith with.

Totally the opposite. If Smith had saved penalties he would have been the hero. Had he not saved any and we had lost, fans would really get on his back. This way, nobody can get on Smith's back. The pressure was all on Sturrock and Bentley. Sturrock made the call to make a sub and it paid off.

I'd expect a more balanced view from you, you usually are the voice of balance and reason.

If your saw Smiths performance, the knockers would have enough ammunition already. That's from someone on the way back from the match!!!

Don't have a problem with smiths reaction. He is a professional and would be upset being subbed, but that's good rather than him not caring. However he should gave shaken bentleys hand but let's not get on his back over it. Still made some good saves tonight.

It's not just Bentley that should be praised but also our 5 penalty takers that all scored. Even though Bentley done his bit by saving one but had 2 of our takers missed then we would have lost. Yes Bentley saved 2 against Bury, Smith may have saved at least 1 or more today had he been given the chance. Also most managers will tell you that practicing penalties in training is nothing like doing it in a shootout when the stakes are high and the pressure is on. I'm sitting on the fence with this one.

It was a crazy sub to try and get in the oxford players heads, it worked, it could easily have not worked, amazing stuff however you feel about it

I honestly cant believe the hoorah over this subsitution and the potential to damage the dressing room etc.

When Bentley saved 2 penatlies in the last round and id say 90% of the fans on this board wanted him to get a run in the team, Sturrock stood by his No1 who is Smith and played him in the next games.

This was just a judgement call by the manager that he fancied Bentley for penalties more than Smith, nothing more and nothing less. I really dont see what all the song and dance is about. Yeah if i was Smith id be upset as penalties are great for keepers as there is no real pressure and a good opportuntiy to be a hero and im not that bothered he stormed off, these things happen spur of the moment and it shows he cares.

End of story, we won the game and now we move on to the next.

I don't know why people bother trying to defend Paul Smith. I haven't seen him have a decent game for us yet. He always looks like he can't be bothered. He was awful again tonight, he is such a flapper. I think I would be less concerned if we had Stevie Wonder between the sticks. It was the right decision by Sturrock to bring Bentley on as he a bit of a penalty specialist. Smith's behaviour was a disgrace. Hope Bentley starts against Exeter on Saturday.

Just seen the goals on SSN. Good save from Bentley from Potter. Benyons penalty was a scuffer along the floor straight at the keeper who somehow dived over it. Maybe Oxford should have subbed their keeper!
