Tour of Duty was an American television drama series on CBS which ran from September 1987 to April 1990. The show follows an American infantry platoon on a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. It was the first television series to regularly show Americans in combat in Vietnam and was one of several similarly-themed series to be produced in the wake of the acclaimed Oliver Stone film, Platoon. The show was created by Steve Duncan and L. Travis Clark, and produced by Zev Braun. It ran for three seasons as 58 one hour episodes.

The Mentalist

Simon Baker stars as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the fictional California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his amazing skills of observation (reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes). He also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium using paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. He abandoned his pretense out of remorse when his attention-seeking behavior attracted the attention of a serial killer who killed his family.

Tour of Duty suffered in the UK as it was screened after midnight on Friday & Saturday nights, but was an excellent series, and as DS has put in his piece above the first TV series which dealt with the war in Vietnam. It was also the forerunner of such films as Platoon, Hamburger Hill & Full Metal Jacket.

Typically with a US series the background music was excellent and IIRC the theme song for the series was Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones.

The Mentalist is a fantastic crime show. Concentrating more on the lead character Patrick Jane who reads people extremely well, and makes very accurate observations of characters and situations. Plus we have Amanda Rigetti who did a very dodgy film in her youth in which she stripped off plenty of times!!!

I do enjoy the Mentalist, imagine Derren Brown solving crimes after having his family murdered.

And, as Mr Gilbo says above, Amanda Righetti is a stunner.

Platoon pre dates the series. the theme song was a cover version of Paint it Black.
