Barnard faces fitness test

shrimperton

Manager
Barnard is having a late fitness test tonight v Leeds cos he hasnt trained cos of a hip problem.

This is becoming a joke, he gets injured every 5 minutes.

Barney.........

Barney looked good in the second half of the game against Yeovil but did seem a be a little slow when chasing down through balls which was not the case earlier in the season.

Yes it is becoming a joke but the very poor injury record is why we got him so cheaply from Spurs last season!

We either have to look at the training (or lack of training) methods or work on some of these guys psychologically as there must be someting lacking somewhere either with the player, his ability to want to be fit or in what he is told to do to maintain fitness and avoid injury!

Could it also be 'big game' syndrome as after the poor showing of late we could be in for a hammering at Leeds!

He endured a pretty physical battering against Yeovil so I'm not really surprised.

I don't think anyone can question Barney's desire as anyone who was at Yeovil could probably attest to. He is clearly getting very frustrated both with himself and his lack of fitness (which has historically been Barney's problem) and the lack of service that he is getting at the moment on the field. There was one occasion in the 1st half when he had an almighty go at Barrett who had just leapt in front of him and skewed a header wide when Barney was obviously in a much better position. While I don't like to see any players having a go at their own team mates, I think it's about time that somebody let the rest of them know where Barney needs to pick the ball up from. It certainly isn't 8ft in the air or barely into the opposition half as seems to be the case these days!

Tilly was apparently shouting words to that effect for most of the second half on Saturday and it didn't make the slightest bit of difference though :madman:

I sw that too, and he's right - I don't like the two CBs thinking it's their God given right to take priority over everyone at corners and such, Barney was indeed much better placed and called it, but Barrett went for it anyway.

often the CB's are the target for the deadballs, and rightly so. If Barney called it then it's Barretts fault obviously, but usually the ball is meant for him or Clarkey

I agree in theory, but not at any cost. I clearly saw Barney call it, and Barrett stretching back to reach it. Barney was actually very vocal on claiming headers all game on Saturday, a few times he called goal kicks or clearances and Moussa or Grant got out of his way, in fact a couple of times he used Moussa to gain height!

Not sure this counts as news - I was under the impression he had to take a fitness test before each and every game he played in? A total and utter waste of resources by the club, and the sonner we get shot of someone who is constantly on the treatment table and replace him with someone not as brital as china, the better.

I kinda agree on this, somone said he only trains twice a week?
but was not aware of having to take a fitness test every game.
he could be so valueable if he stayed fit.....big if.
if not should be replaced true

So if he's not 100% fully fit, and we're waiting on a fitness test to determine his fitness level, why are we rushing him back into the squad for tonight?

Smacks desperation if you ask me.

FFS some of you need to take a reality check. A player of Barnard's ability would not be playing for us if he did not have a flaw. His flaw as we all knew was his fitness. Like a lot of players we get it's a gamble. At the moment the gamble's not paying off.

Yeah but even in Tillys wildest dreams he would have expected him to play 2 in a row sometime!

The problem is,ifhe only played 20 to 25 games a season for us, he most probably would still be our top goal scorer.

how can a team like southend sustain having two of our first choice forwards who are constanly injured and never play together

the fact is it cant, and shouldnt
