Of course I don't hate  Flahavan, Tony - what a ridiculous word to choose.  I'm not sure I hate anyone on this fair planet of ours (though Mr. Boere comes close).  As for the "shame on you" quote... get a grip.  Please come and meet me and discuss things with me rather than insulting me via this messageboard.

Last night, I watched some of the highlights of the Southend games over the course of the season, and I saw all the goals - scored and conceded.  A number of things really struck me:

The Good Stuff

1. Freddy is different class (but we all knew that anyway).

2. Wayne Gray is even better than I thought... would Freddy have scored as many as he did withouth him?  I doubt it.

3. Beno is a colossus.  Once he's got into a game (usually takes him about 30 minutes), he's a monster.  Opposition defences couldn't handle him last season.

4.  A fit & on-song Mark Gower is a fabulous player, and links up so, so well with Freddy.

5. Juppy's not a bad crosser of the ball.

The Bad Stuff

6. Opposition teams hurt us by going wide; we appear to be unusually vulnerable on the flanks (particularly compared to our goals - which we score from all attacking zones).  In other words, our full-backs aren't nearly as strong as our centre backs (but we knew that anyway).

7. And finally, though it pains me to say it... I don't think either of our keepers are that great, to be honest.  OK, so I'm being a sentimental old fool... but neither Darryl nor Bart appear to rule their area in the way that Sammy & Roycey did.

Darryl has got one big, big advantage over Bart: and that's his youth.  He has got time to improve.  He has improved this season, no doubt.

But is he good enough for League One?  Is he good enough for us?  I'm afraid I don't share your blind faith in him, Tony; and at least my scepticism is based on the vaguely scientific research of watching how goals are scored against us.

Besides - and I'm going to stop saying this now because you quite clearly have no intention of listening to me - my point was simply that there is not a single player in this squad whom we should keep if they are making wage demands which we cannot sustain.

You said that we should keep a player "at all costs".  The logical conclusion of your argument is that if Freddy demands £20K a week, we should pay him that... even if it bankrupts us.

Well, I disagree.  If we can't afford to pay him £20K a week, then we have to sell him.  That's the point I was making - and it applies to every single player in the squad, including Darryl.

I have faith in Tilly & Ron's judgement.  They know what he's worth, and what's out there in terms of replacements.  The rest is up to Darryl.

Whoa! Matt in 'shall we take this outside' shocker...

In all fairness, given that its Matt, its more likely to end up being a Cilla Black style "Step out(in)side, Love" than a Muhammad Ali style "I'll beat him so bad he'll need a shoehorn to put his hat on"...

Matt
I never did insult you my friend! In fact the same has been said to me about, 'thank-god Tilly is manager and not me'.
The phrase which i said to you.

Everyone has views on SUFC and their players.

I just have strong views on Darryl and trully believe he is as good or better than Simon Royce (we wont go into that will we, our view's differ, lets agree to disagree).

I enjoyed reading your last post Matt, but reading between the lines it just came across you was so anti-Darryl, and you said alot of negative things about him, and little positive!

Maybe i'm wrong, maybe i've mis-understood you, i dont know.
We all have strong views on SUFC. It would be boring if everyone agreed.

I'm sorry if i caused you any stress over this matter.

As for the coming to meet you to have a SUFC chat?? Are you treating me to a beer or three then

Let's just get on ok, i like reading your very informative posts.

UP THE BLUES!

Sorry dude!

Fair enough, Tony. Likewise no stress or insults were intended on my part - so apologies if I've overstepped the mark.

I do think you're a bit nuts when it comes to Darryl, though. As good as Royce?! Where's the Premier$hite career to prove it?!

I'm not massively "anti-Darryl" as such. But I do happen to think that (a) he has a lot of flaws in his game; and (b) we can and should get a better keeper in. But I'd like him to stay at the club... we need strong competition for every place in the squad.

But do I think he's our long term Number 1? Nope. He's not good enough. And on that, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree.

Cheers,

Matt
