The Realist
Just got back from yesterdays game, yes I know its a bit late, but you know what the traffic can be like on the A1 on a Saturday night!!
Even 24+ hours after the event, I am still as pi**ed off now as I was yesterday.
Now I hate losing as much, probably more, than anyone else, but when you put up a fight, try your best, or are just beaten by a better side, then sometimes you have to accept it and move on.
Unfortunately, none of the above apply to this game. I have to say that this was one of the most abject, passionless, gutless and uninspiring performances I have seen from a Southend side for a very long time.
What on earth has happened to us in the space of two weeks??
Last week against Swansea was bad enough, but yesterday, it was appalling. There was nothing there, absolutely nothing.
Our first attempt on target I believe was Wayne Gray's header about ten minutes from the end!!
Im sorry, and I may get torn to pieces for this post, but the last two performances have just been totally unacceptable. This is a team we know are capable of wonderful things, and it is difficult to be too critical when you see we are third in the table, but it was just the way we lost yesterday which has got me so wound up.
One of the main reasons for our success has been no shortage of ability and skill mixed with a very large helping of high work rate, belief, and teamwork..... None of that was in evidence yesterday in my opinion.
You have a team with a relatively small fan base who take over 2100 fans to support you away from home and you do that for them? Not good enough.
As I say, if you get beaten by the better team, then fair enough, but I dont think Forest will have an easier three points all season.
The players just seemed devoid of anything, with only a few exceptions.
JCR - Im not sure why people on here criticise him for no end product. He works harder in that midfield than anyone, and it was his end product which should have seen us get a point against Swansea last week... well at least it would have done if Freddie hadnt been entering his effort for miss of the season!!
Wayne Gray - Not overly effective yesterday, although with the service of either a. completely missing out the midfield or b. the midfield not even attempting anything resembling a through ball, its no surprise. BUT, I think Messers Eastwood and Goater should take a look at his workrate. He was constantly chasing back, harrying defenders and defending from the front. Had the rest of the team played with that much commitment and effort, we would not have been beaten.
Jay Smith - Was more effective in the short period of time than the most of the others were for the entire game. Must start next week ahead of Bentley.
And thats it, as for the rest them, just not acceptable.
We are a good side, we have not become, at least I dont think we have, a bad side over night, BUT we cant put in many more performances like the last two otherwise the dream of two promotions in a row will be nothing more than just that, a dream.
I dont like to criticise Tilly either after he has done such an amazing job, but comments on the website like his do not help. 'Not many teams will come to Forest and get points'. 'We didnt get the luck today'. No, sorry Tilly, we didnt deserve anything other than what we got yesterday, a defeat.
