Anyone remember...

A game that consisted of two lengths of string with two handles at each end. Running along the string was a rugby ball shaped piece of orange plastic.

Two players, each holding onto a set of handles stood facing each other with the strings taut.

The idea was to move your hands apart as the plastic thing got near you thus sending it back and forth on the string.

I have no idea what the point of it all was, or how you won and noone I know can even remember it - but you used to see them on the beach often.

Anyone remember it at all?

What was it called?

I was going to google it but what the hell would I put!

Why did I look at this thread before bedtime?

I can see the game now, a beach game wasn't it advertised as?

What was it called?

ARRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!

....right go away.... I didn't read this, I will not think about it until the morning..........

ArrrrrRRRRRRRRRR GGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Cheers ORM - you are the man! Someone at work reckons it was called a Gong or a Going?

Well Artful, glad you remember them too - that makes three of us!

Taken from the toys of the 70's website;-

Whoosh
I'm pretty sure the name is correct. It was a yard game with two nylon strings with handles on either end. There was a hollow football shaped piece that was transported from person to person via the nylon strings. One person holding one end of each string would stretch their arms out and the hollow football would travel the length of the nylon strings to the other person, who would perform the same motion and drive it back to the other person. We had alot of fun with it.

Or it could be;-

Opy Yops
I think that is what they were called.... It was two disks threaded through a string, as you pulled the two ends of the strings, they would spin, and the string would bunch, then you would pull it again, and the disks would click together or something like that!!!

and again and also;-

The Opee-op
a round plastic disk between two strings. you pulled on the end of the strings back and forth to get the opee-op to spin. It would make a buzzing sound when it was really going fast.

I don't remember the name, but maybe that's it? be nice to find a picture of the damn thing now. An old neighbour had one and after 2 minutes it got boring as i recall and ended up a tangled mess.

Now.

Moderators.

Can we please ban all talk of retro things we can't remember the names of, I hate those Mike Baldwin moments.

Whoosh - that definitely sounds like it - lets revamp it, make the strings longer and play East Stand against West.

Cheers Artful.
