Any plumbers about?

Ok I've got a bit of a problem.

For about my week whenever I've flushed my loo a terrible foghorn type noise starts.

Tonight I notice that theres almost no water in the cistern and this foghorn noise seems to happen all the time. Strangely I've lifted to ball valve float and rested it on top of the mechanism and the noise seems to have stopped.

I hope this makes sense and someone out there has an idea how I can go about fixing the problem.
