As the title says I'm thinking of having electricity put into the shed, but will need a sparky to do it.

Er it's not.

Get someone in J, they'll need to work out cable size depending and design and you'll need to get it signed off by the council.[/QUOTE]

I didn't know you needed the council to sign off having electricity put down to the shed?

Said in the worried tone of a man sitting in his shed watching TV, next to an electric heater while the kettle gently comes to the boil next to him.

Any alterations to the electrics in your property require safety sign off by the council - but would only really matter if you were going to sell it I guess. I put in a spur in the bedroom, but I am (was) a trained spark.

It's dangerous stuff folks, you can do some serious damage if you don't get it right.

Surely all you have to do is hide the cable? I suggest putting it through a pond.

I ran a line into my brick built shed a while back. You will need a spare fuseway in your consumer unit as the feed has to be dedicated to outside use only. If you are comfortable with turning off the consumer unit, locating the spare, running a cable feed from unit to shed and sealing your exit from the house and into the shed with the correct sealants, then its pretty straightforward. Cable size will depend on what you want to run off it.

This site may be of some help if you're feeling ok with it all:

Be aware that they are not very kind to those they think are time wasters.

If you are not comfortable with any of it, they will probably recommend a sparks that is local to you. If in doubt, don't do it.

Depends how far the shed is. To save on labour costs I ran 25m of SWA cable down to the stepsons shed. From the consumer unit under floor boards and drilling holes and running the cable down the garden was the main work. My mate who is a sparks connected and tested everything. The Landlord was fine with that arrangement.

Yep, that's another option, all the prep work done by the user and the sparks does the connections and tests, it does reduce the cost. Best to check it out with the sparks first though to make sure what prep work is done is up to the mark.

Agreed as well.

I was thinking of an overhead cable, connected to a double plug socket. The nearest room to the shed is the utility room but the plug socket is on the furthest wall. Technically I could run a 12 metre extension lead along a wall through a drilled hole in the utility room into another hole in the shed and just use the extension lead sockets, but that would be messy.
time to call in the experts.

That would be the cheapest but not the safest option. Depends what you intend to do down that shed of yours..... I mean from an electrical point of view.
