can't find a link yet, but radio 4 news just reported that a Southend fan has won a national competition to come up with a new football chant, judged by various poets and the like. It was something about Dougie Freedman, I think to the Wombles theme tune?

Anyway, go us. apologies if this has been posted elsewhere.

Radio 4 Footie chant - did I hear right???

Just caught the end of the Radio 4 midnight news and was startled (!) to hear a chant in praise of Dougie Freedman and SUFC. Did I hear right? What on Earth?????

Very bizarre. Didn't hear it myself, can't find anything on the BBC website, but there is this on the GMTV website.

There is a link on there to the competition website, but on there, down at the bottom, it says that the closing date is 31 December 2009? So how come Radio 4 are announcing the winner already???

it was a comp on talk sport radio . Apparently you can hear it on talk sport web pages.

The chant was :

""Underground, overground signed on a free,

He's Dougie Freedman of S.U.F.C.

Scores goals for fun, he's blue through and through,

Better watch out 'cos he'll score against you.""

On Sky this morning, John Barnes was one of the judges. They concentrated on the Premiership entries then almost as an afterthought said the title was won by League One outfit Southend. They then showed a bit of it.
