Album of the week #1 (w/e 20 Jan)

I thought seeing as we mostly all like a bit of music on here to create a regular music thread similar but again slightly different to the Metal Mondays, Afternoon Indie Disco, One To Start The Weekend type threads.

Basically, a forum for people to discuss what they think of a new album in the week after it's release. Seeing as I've just had this idea and I know for a fact there's at least 2 other regular posters on here who will have got their hands on this, I am going to put forward British Sea Power's 'Do You Like Rock Music?', released 14/01/08 as my initial choice for debate.

Personally for me the album starts off in an almost Arcade Fire type style, with anthemic chanting set to swirling melodies. The familiar BSP type of sound gradually returns as you work through the album though, building up to full effect with recent singles 'No Lucifer' and then 'Atom' towards the end of the record. I also really like the experimentations with sound that they have also tried to do on tracks such as 'Trip Out' - reminds me in places of when late 70s punk grew up a bit and instrumental track 'The Great Skua' - which is a Sigur Ros style ethereal masterpiece.

Also maybe worth mentioning is track 5 'Canvey Island', although I'm yet to work out the meaning of the lyrics to that one (it mentions the 1953 floods & lost records of a football team at one point).

Thoughts?

If you haven't got it yet here is the link to it on Amazon £8.98 and the BSP website

I was thinking next week of going for Lightspeed Champion's 'Falling Off The Lavender Bridge', unless anybody can come up with a better suggestion. Only qualifying rule is the album needs to be released today to be discussed next week.

completely agree... absolutely blinding, like arcade fire mixed with godspeed you black emperor (funny cos members from both help produce it) it's loud, bombastic, beautiful and down-right flipping amazing!

what an album, i'm off to listen to it for about the 5th time today!

I look forward to your review of Mika's "tricky" second album where he goes all trip-hop....

Here it is: -

2nd albums are always tricky, but Mika has carried on from where he left off with horrible screeching high-pitched vocals over substandard session musician generated beats. Avoid it as much as possible.

0 out of 10 :p

Good call re BSP's new album. I'm always a little nervous when a band I really like bring out a new album, worrying if it will hit the usual heights. No need for such worries here.

"Do You Like Music" is excellent and they get an extra half point for naming a song after my home town! Looking forward to their gig at Koko next Thursday...
