Airline applies 'Fat Tax'

Campaigners claimed the move was "blatant discrimination" and said the problem was that seats were too small, not that people were too big.

****ing fat yank *****!

yes. yes. yes. about time! i've never thought it fair that i, being 10 stone, pays the same as a 20 stone bloke.

reading the article has just brought to my attention the fact that there is a "Fat Rights Coalition". hahaha, that's the funniest thing i've read all day!

Conversely though, what about the people over 6' that are made to squash into the same space as someone who is less than 5'? You can't help your height and by the nature of it, someone that tall is always likely to be quite a bit heavier than someone that small, or even a child being as you have to pay full whack for them at such a young age. Airlines just need to learn to stop treating passengers like cattle and cramming everyone in like they're on the way to the meat market.

Will an obese person get an allowance of 2 peoples food and drink if he has to pay for 2 seats? I doubt it!

So that argument is bollocks!

About time too!! I have had many an uncomfortable experience on a plane where the person next to me has more than taken up their allocated space. Hopefully this policy will now stretch to trains too as this will make my daily commute much more comfortable and stop me from praying that the fat person who just got on the train doesnt get drawn to the seat next to me, which seems to be the case, even though there are other seats available.

There a big difference to someone who is tall, and therefore heavy, to someone that is Obese.

Obesity is (in 95% of cases) not an illness, and is down to lazyness and bad diet.

Altho, i do agree with LDNFATSO that if you do have to pay for two seats, you should get double the baggage allowance.

exactly. I'm 6ft 2 and not having much leg-room is something I expect. However I don't like having to sit next to an obese person whose legs and body are squeezed up against me, and who is able to get on for no extra charge whilst I've forked out 20quid for an extra couple of kilos luggage.

Word to that my skins lookalike bretherin!

I'm 15 stone but I am 6'3 so most of my weight is due to my height.
OK - I could do with losing another few kilos but it's a work in progress.
If some, slightly above minimum wage, check in person tried to charge me extra they could F.R.O.....

The simple solution is to pay them more!

you're BMI is only 26.2, and so your only slightly Overweight, and not Obese (BMi 30+), therefore the charge would not apply to you?

How is all this going to be monitored when the likes of Ryanair are getting rid of Check in Desks?
Are we gonna have scales built into seats whereby if you weigh the seat down a certain amount then spikes come out of the seat until such time as you have swiped your debit card?

I don't see why airlines charge extra for excess baggage.

When I dangerously overload my car (at a French Hypermarket, a trip to Wickes or fly tipping hardcore for example) I just drive a bit slower and avoid speed bumps.

If anything I drive a bit more carefully which isn't a bad thing.

It's probably a lot easier in a plane with no obstacles or police to avoid.

Something i agree with. As i believe i have said on here before, why should 2kilo's of luggage be any different from 2 kilo's of Fat? It all costs the same in fuel!

I think the point is being missed here, it is nothing to do with weight and fuel costs but the fact the seat next to said obese person is some what restricted. So becomes unusable and thus not profitable. The extra baggage thing is just a way to earn more money out of each punter.

Also remember this is in the US of A where the word Obese is used for people who we would consider enormous.

One other thing BMI was developed in the 1840's, and is not a completely flawless method. In fact researchers have found that a waist to height ratio is a more accurate way to calculate if a person is unhealthy.

BMI is a rubbish way because If your a stocky rugby player who does not have an ounce of fat on him you will still have to pay more

Utter crap
