ADSL Broadband

McScriven

The Ball Boy
I'm looking at getting ADSL Broadband but I've got about 4 PC's that I need to get onto it. From my limited knowledge in this area I think I need an ADSL Modem (just one?) and a Router.

Is this right? What sort of work is involved getting this set-up? And is it better/cheaper to buy these myself or get the ones supplied by the broadband providers?

Any help would be mucho appreciated and can anyone recommend a provider. I only want to spend about 25 quid a month so I'm probably looking at the 512 kps options I would imagine.

If you get a 4-Port ADSL router, you can plug all the PC's into that (and the ADSL) and with a little tweaking all will be networked and sharing the internet connection. I'm not sure of the price of a router, but its normally less than £100.

You can buy combined ADSL Modem and Wireless Routers, saves getting two devices.

I usually buy Netgear and would easily recommend them but but any decent company's kit should be good enough.

Netgear solution

Well insight do them for £105 inc VAT. About £22 more than the one you picked but that one does not really have a firewall.

All it is doing is NAT which the Netgear is doing as well as SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) which all top commercial firewalls are now based on.

OK mate that looks cool then. So if I got this I wouldn't have to get a modem or anything when I signed upto to a service provider and I could connect my machines and a printer into a network?

With regards to supplier, most of my mates use Bulldog and they have no complaints. Bulldog ADSL

Exactly I setup up one for my mother-in-law's workplace.
You get 4 LAN ports and the wifi. I have wifi and it is great to get a laptop and sit downstairs doing work, cant wait for the summer to be able to sit outside and work.

Just my quick 2 p's worth . I know its slightly expensive , but for features and comparative price the Draytek 2600G wifi is a v good router/DSL modem. about £180+ !
