According to the Sunday People we are taking Man City 20yo RB Adam Drury on loan for the season.

Can you honestly believe anything written in the Sunday People? If you can, it's an interesting one. Didn't he play for Burton against us in the play-off semi-finals? Versatile player who can play full-back or on the wing. What would he be for though defensive cover? covering for Timlin (doesn't sound like it)......do we need another winger. Presumably he'd want to play regularly.......don't quite see it. Maybe a loan until Christmas but for the whole year I have my doubts. We shall see.

Neither John White or Ben Coker played very well yesterday I thought. I wonder if Whitey is still having some issues with his shoulder?

But I wouldn't be looking for a loan player as cover ................. :'(

I'd rather keep the money in my pocket for the time being.

John White is so poor going forward which is such a disadvantage these days the way teams set up. If Coker has an off day we need the other full back to be able to attack a bit. Skipper or not, if you're not always contributing you might be dropped. ..

Interesting too in his post-match interview yesterday that PB said he'd "taken a little look" at Stanley's RB.So he must have been thinking of bringing someone in for JW for a while.

Don't get this comment at all. For example last season he has one of the most assists in league from players other than attacking players (ie forwards and attacking midfielders). Most importantly however defensively he is sound. He stands players up and is actually quite difficult to get past. The way brown is setting up the midfield and forward units I personally would prefer my defensive 5 to do just that - defend !! Yes there are probably better players than White, but to start bashing him, the captain of this team, is a bit too far for me (and yes I was there yesterday as well !!)

Well said  I think that White was sound defensively in his first season and captained the defensive unit to a clean sheet yesterday. Cover and competition would be welcomed but White is not an issue whatsoever. A huge bonus with White is that he can play centrally or even at left back too.

Spoke to Mr Brown in Waitrose today so he is obviously shopping at all the best places what with being interested in Man City players.

Regarding Coker, it looked to me as though he had been told to reign in his forward runs, as he was not overlapping like he did last season, as players were looking at playing in Weston down the left rather than looking for Coker. As for White, he isn't the same player as Coker, so when he does have space down the right he checks inside, and more often than not plays the ball into the box with his left foot. Both played ok yesterday, so don't really understand the criticism. In any case, the ball spent most of the time in central areas yesterday, with Prosser and Bolger winning countless headers. Accrington were very direct

Full backs are part of the back four to defend. Defending is the number one priority. If they can attack and get forward well then it's a bonus, but they need to be sound defensively. I'd much rather take a full back who is solid defensively and weak offensively over a full back that is average defensively and decent going forward.

In all honesty, I wouldn't want two attack minded full backs. If Coker goes forward and we get caught on the break - Prosser, Bolger and White can make a back three until Coker or the midfield can cover. If you have two very attack minded full backs who are both sitting high up the pitch, you can find yourself heavily outnumbered on the back of one stray pass.

Unless you've got a player like Sergio Busquets who is more than happy to just sit and stay just infront of your defensive line at all times (which I don't believe we have), then White is exactly what we need.

As TTS says above White was well up in the assists charts so he isnt exactly poor going forward anyway.

i'm not disputing that JW is 6-7/10 every week he is a good defender. i cannot believe that stat re assists, his crossing is woeful as is his passing game.
it might be different this season with new wingers/forwards, but how well Ben Coker plays is so important to the team; if he has an off day then the whole team suffers. Having an alternative outlet on the right who could also do that role would both take the pressure off Ben somewhat and also allow the midfield more options.
To be fair to John he is playing behind Hurst who has been woeful since about New Year, but since the shoulder injury he doesn't quite seem the same player. If when I see him on Saturday he is back to his best then I will gladly come on here and say so!

But that's the thing.

I look at John White and see a functional right back who's good off the ball and solid in the air and reads the game pretty well.

He's also good and putting crosses in, but often our play tends to end up with him and he'll try to put the killer cross or pass in.

Numerous times last season I saw good play across the pitch from our left side and midfield. The space would end up being on the right where White was free and he'd have time to put in a cross. That's decent tactical play. However I think that does overstate the impact that White has had or his total contribution to our 'forward' play.

Against teams who are vulnerable in defence or in the air it's a good tactic to get the ball to Hurst and/or White with time and space to put in a decent cross.

However, against tougher teams to break down it's no surprise that Coker starts to look better going forward. IMO he's better in possession, links up better, gets past people with good 1-2s and has some skills and pace. He also isn't one dimensional, he'll cross or feint or cutback and those are useful against better teams.

So my point is, White has good assist stats but (without Pringello which seems to be down) I'd guess that fans have rated Coker's performances higher and Coker usually looks more competent in attack. When we're under pressure then often Whites distribution is poor, and that's a weakness which not only kills any attack but also immediately puts us under pressure. It's a game of fine margins and so personally I'm glad we're (apparently) taking a look at another RB who will provide cover and potential challenge White for a place.

I wrote a piece about White last season as we started the playoffs about his poor performances (the timing was bad I'll admit) and I wonder if Brown also has concerns. He brings a lot to the team and the squad and is a nice guy and seems a decent captain, however we need to improve on last year and that might mean being ruthless and making sure no one feels they're an automatic pick.

If any SUFC player believed themselves to be an automatic pick then they shouldnt, that would only bring on complacency, which will breed mistakes into their game, their should be cover for each position ,to make every member of the playing staff have to fight to earn their place, only then will we win promotion.
