Adam Barett today (take two)

Last week i was rather fast to jump on the youg man's case and question whether he should be dropped for this gaem.

Thank f%&k he wasn't!

He scored two today and i hold my hands up and say i dont think Spinner would have been there for either chance and the boy did well.

I shall go and cut a large wedge of humble pie!

quality performance from barrett, defended really well too. slightly shakey start with a couple of loose touches, but dug in and kept a woeful stead at bay

ratings:
flavs - 9: great 1on1 save, held everything in the air and was simply outstanding
francis - 7: worked well, solid performance with a couple of late tackles, a few loose passes but i think thats from expecting players to be somewhere without looking, will improve
hammell - 7: great delivery for barretts 2nd, solid defending and good set pieces
prior - 7: took a couple of knocks which forced him off, the 2nd looked serious. up till then he played well and wasnt troubled due to sunderlands lack of pace
barrett - 8.5: excellent goals, back to his league 2 days! defended well, especially in the 2nd half
JCR - 7: worked hard and spread the ball around more, not one of his best games as was kept in check by robbie elliot
maher - 7.5: class showed in 2nd half, unflashy in the 1st, broke up the play and brought the flanks into the game
gutts - 6.5: still finding his feet but a better performance than palace, needs to look up before passing sometimes though as he played a couple of hospital passes
gower - 9 my MOTM: all attacks went through him, great play for bradburys goal and tracked back well... looks better than ever
bradbury - 7: took goal well but did little more than throw his weight around for most the game, when breaking away hesitated... needs to be more direct sometimes
freddy - 5.5: worst game i think i have seen freddy play, was well marked but spent most of the game offside and arguing with their back 4. passing was poor and no genuine attempts on goal

subs:
clarke - 7.5, impressive game, came on when the game was in the balance and dominated the air and looked good on the ground. first thing he did when coming on was shove Jon Stead so gets an extra 0.5 for that alone!
lawson - 7, had a good shot saved, needs to watch the line though as was miles offside a couple of times
hunt - 7, good last few minutes, however let them ghost through for their consolation goal at the end

ref - 7

Barrett gets a fair bit of stick on here, but he proved today (again) what an asset he is for Southend United. Great performance.

Just maybe Barrett is more comfortable with a pacy centre-half alongside him? He seemed to improve when Prior had to go off.

Is that before or after you learn how to spell his name ?

Barrett did well today - nice to see someone other than Fred score as well. Incidentally, Fred had a nightmare today ,perhaps Tilly has told him to play badly so no-one bids for him in the transfer window!

My thoughts exactly....Reports suggest that a few premiership scouts were here today so hopefully they went away with the right (for us) impression

All we need now is Fred to up his game a little but not to shine until the Sheffield Wednesday game....then let Fred go on a goal fest

Adam certainly answered his critics and maybe reading what was said about him is what inspired him... yes, he does occasionally read the forums, as discovered when I spoke to him last month.

Obviously adding fuel to the fire can work to our advantage sometimes, but I would stop short of requesting a repeat performance the next time he doesn't play so well... but hopefully he won't need any more inspiration.

Top performance by all the lads yesterday!!! brilliant.

Apart from people on here who are all obviously perfect and could easily adjust to 3 different levels of football in as many seasons - a mere mortal such as myself would allow the odd mistake by a player whose commitment and work rate for this club can never be questioned - you could see when he scored the first goal how much he was up for it and always is.. Someone who loves the club as he (and Tilly before him) clearly does is invaluable!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. Barrett is an absolute legend. Why would anyone question him?

Sunderland's defending was certainly reminiscent of league two defending!

Quite how you leave both centre-halves completely unmarked at a free-kick I don't know. Its not as if we've got that many players you need to mark at set-pieces.

quite right Mrs P. I doubt if there's anyone who works harder on the pitch or at training than Barrett. He'll be more aware than anyone about his limitations and will work as hard as he can to reach the next level. I was impressed that having worried me that he could move up to the first division level and now championship that he's proving my worries to be unfounded. I thought he and Clarke manage their tall and useful Heald and the tall and useless Kyle (a sort of up market Drewe) very well.

Who? There was no one of that name playing. Stead started upfront with Daryl Murphy with Stephen Elliot wasted on the right hand side.

sorry Neil. It was indeed Stead. I have a cold.

However Kyle came on at 70 mins and is the sort of lump that I thought might unsettle the shorter Barrett and Clarke. However they dealt with him pretty well IMHO
