Abuse of opposing players.

The PL League Boss⭐⭐🦐
We hear it at every game and at every ground in the country, but this is nothing new. I am doing some research on the Kursaal and here is a complaint about the crowd in a reserve match (South Eastern League) v Southampton in 1919.

I visited the Kursaal last Saturday and watched a creditable display by the local men against the more experienced opponents, and also a sorry display from a small section of the spectators in the north West side of the ground, towards the visiting players. I have always understood that the Southend public paid their money to see a game of football to played by teams that strive to mastery by all legitimate means and I was therefore astounded to hear from some of the crowd reported exhortations to the local players to “lay them out Southend” and to see with what pleasure an accident to a visiting player was greeted.

In the second half the Southampton outside left received a bad kick and left the field for a short time, but with commendable pluck resumed at a crucial period for his side. and because he strove to overcome the effects of his blow was greeted for the rest of the game with cries such as “Get off the field” “S******” “You never were injured” “You ought to get the V.C.” The decisions of the referee who seemed very fair was also subject to some uncomplimentary remarks from these same gentleman.

So we don't want to hear anyone at Roots Hall with comments like "lay them out Southend" "get off the field" and I would have thought that any "s******" chants would be a ban at least.

I might just add that the word that has been censored above is not a swearword it starts with an S then a word which is now a swearword, meaning someone with a superior attitude.

football seems weird back then. the amount of abuse players get today compared to back then is like night and day. i don't think football would be the same if the crowd was not as vocal.

S*******? I don't know it! (later --->) Oh I have now!

I'd never want to see an opposition hurt if i'm honest...

I like to get behind our team (and therfore side very heavily with us), but have to be honest when a player has experienced a serious injury and I (and or most other people in the crowd) have shouts of "get up" etc. I do feel quite bad about it soon after..
