Or within the speed limit?

At the risk of sounding patronising, which I hope I'm not, speed cameras are only placed (despite what the Middle England press claim) at sites where there have been a series of fatal accidents. If you are traveling at over the limit, which we all do, and you fail to spot a speed camera (and they aren't exactly camofluaged) then you aren't paying enough attention to your driving and you shouldn't be travelling that fast.

Also AA route finder will include speed cameras in its directions, so you only need a half decent navigator.....

I know it's far too late but as my mother-in-law used to live in Devon I'm very well versed on the A303. Not only do they have an abundance of speed cameras, mostly as Bob C has pointed out in Wiltshire, but they also have far too many unmarked police cars and plenty of random mobile cameras over bridges, in laybys etc. I actually stopped using it in the end because I was spending more time worrying about where the scumbags were than enjoying the drive.

I don't consider 80-85 at 6am in the morning in the middle of nowhere on a dual carriageway to be a bloody danger to anyone other than myself or a stray cow.

You can also stick your 70mph limits up yer jacksie. These were put in place when it took cars 3 times as long as it does now to brake at that speed. I'd trade a raised 80 limit for a 20 mph limit around schools and hospitals. Seems only fair.

As I said, just about everyone ignores the limits at times, but I stand by my original statement that if one doesn't spot the hazard in time it's a fair indication that one isn't paying enough attention to be doing that speed in the first place. I also don't buy the "better brakes these days" arguement, even though they are better there are too many other factors involved to make that anything to rely on. And you will never see an 80mph limit, if anything it will go the other way to reduce CO2 emissions.

Hmmm, you've never driven a Mk1 Escort clearly :p

:hilarious:

Kids of today have no idea of the adrenalin rush you get when you actually have to stand up on the brake to bring the damn thing to a halt! My MkII Cortina wasn't much better, either.

But seriously my point is that the extra braking gets "discounted" by modern drivers, and as a result not many people bother to keep a proper stopping distance for the speed they are doing.
