Question A minute silence for Nelson Mandela at all league games.

I don't understand why we are doing this?I seem to remember the football league being against holding a minute silence for lady Thatcher when she passed away.

Don't worry there isn't a minute silence ...... some people may clap for a minute though.

Exactly my point. Thatcher did something for this country. Love her or hate her she was a loyal servant to the country. Nelson Mandela was a South African leader. Nothing really to do with England or football.

I just don't get why the english football fans have to observe the silence for somebody who has nothing to do with our country or football.I would get it if someone like Pele died but not a foreign politician .

I agree, this has absolutely sod all to do with football in our country. Stop politicising sport.

Think they've got it about right. a lot of people want to pay their respects so will clap and they know a few won't so they chose a minutes applause compared to minutes silence when they know it will be impecabbly observed. the minutes silence at 'that' Southampton game was amazing, in fact its only Vic jobsons silence I've heard get abused, by the home fans!

It was so bad it only lasted about 35 seconds.

But an outrage and offence to the soul of every person living in the UK, note the "UK" bit there, still part of these shores.

Sounds to me like a lot of people finding differences to justify everything that has happened in the past, and to still justify not affording NM the same recognition.

I'd rather celebrate the life of Mandela, and all that he achieved, compared to Thatcher and the fact that she was probably complicit in (or unbelievably blind to) the cover-up of the murder manslaughter of 96 Liverpool fans.

Indeed. Letters like this spring to mind:

People who join the Armed Forces do so knowing forewell that, on occasion, they could be called apon to take part in a theatre of war that may well put their lifes at risk. Thatcher sent troops to The Falklands, a place you have repeatedly expressed the opinion that Argentina should have sovereignty over, as Blair and Brown sent troops to Iraq and Cameron to Afganistan. Just another gilt edged excuse for a dig at Thatcher. I wonder what your feelings are on the Russian invasion of Afganistan, China in Tibet etc.
