Zone Update A Bench for Barks.

As you will be aware, back in 2020 we sadly lost our former club captain Chris Barker. With the support of his family, in Chris’s memory, and with the aim of making a real positive difference, SZ is proud to be part of a ‘Bench for Barks’ campaign, and we need YOUR help please.

The poster gives further details – the aim is to install at least one of these benches around Roots Hall where it will be accessible 24/7. The ‘Legend on the Bench’ charity story is an emotional one and it can be found at https://www.legend-on-the-bench.co.uk/ ('the story' link on the page under 'about us' is worth a view)– please take a moment to read. Though they have now installed many benches across the UK, our club will be the first football club to have a bench at its stadium (we hope to have more than one).

This is a big joint effort – SUEPA/the Shrimpers Trust is partnering with ourselves at SZ, our club, the Echo, and Andy’s Man Club to seek to make this campaign a success, and we will keep you informed of its progress every step of the way.

To make this campaign work we need donations please, so if you can help in any way the Just Giving page link you need is:

https://www.justgiving.com/page/benchforbarks-suepa?utm_term=m56Vzmbe8&utm_medium=FA&utm_source=WA

Every contribution will lead to us together being able to make a difference.

Also, please keep an eye out for news of fundraising social events soon to be announced associated with this campaign.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear that Chris, not sure why. Unless someone else comes up with a solution maybe try again tomorrow, do let me know either way - if there is still a problem when you try next I'll contact the charity to see if they have heard of it.
Cheers, Andy

Don't click on the link but go direct to the site (Just Giving) and then search for "Bench for Barks"

Should be this image

Thanks to all for your donations to date- in the first evening of this campaign we achieved 25% of our target which is a top start.
There will be a quiz to help raise funds for the campaign at The Railway pub on Thurs 27 Feb - once I have more details I'll let you know. Maybe a team of SZ brains could get together to form a team for it ......

As many fans will be aware, back in 2020 we sadly lost our former club captain Chris Barker. With the support of his family, in Chris’s memory, and with the aim of making a real positive difference, the Southend United ex-Players Association (SUEPA)/the Shrimpers Trust have launched a ‘Bench for Barks’ campaign.

The aim is to raise monies to site at least one very special bench at Roots Hall where it will be accessible 24/7. The benches are provided by the charity ‘Legend on the Bench’ whose ambassadors include Micky Hazard and World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles. You can find out more about the wonderful work they do here.

A bench will not only be a fitting tribute to Chris but it will also be a place where, if someone ever feels alone, they can use it as a source for information. The benches are fitted with integral lighting, so they are a beam of light for those in crisis at night.

Though many of these benches have now been installed across the UK, we are proud to say that our club will be the first football club to have a bench at its stadium (we hope to have more than one).

This is a big joint effort – SUEPA/the Shrimpers Trust is working with ourselves, the Echo, Shrimperzone, and Andy’s Man Club to seek to make this campaign a success, which will also include a soon-to-be-announced fundraising quiz.

To make this campaign work we need donations please, so if you can help in any way, the Just Giving page link you need is below...

Any ideas as to where the bench would go? Roots Hall is locked up at night so the bench would be inaccessible "after hours"

We do lack any green space at the stadium (other than the pitch) so hope this will be addressed when a fan park / new East stand is constructed

I think there was some discussion about having it opposite the Club shop so it was accessible after hours, but don't quote me on that as we had the zoom call about 2 weeks or so ago.

Yep, correct, so it could be outside the gates. Fine tuning re exactly where will be sorted when we've got the funds in place - and key too will be ensuring that although it will be secured it will need to be capable of being unsecured so we can move it as and when the ground gets redeveloped.

If we raise enough then the aim will be to have another bench, perhaps on the West side
