-5 and counting

Elvisisashrimper

Youth Team
Our current goal difference is -5 along with Barnsley and Parkinsons Hull are -6

If we play with a defensive midfielder sitting in front of the back 4 then we should be able to shore things up. In my mind Efe should take Clarkes place but with Clarke sitting in this defensive midfield postion as his physical size and ball distrubution are good.

We are leaking too many goals to survive and I just hope we sort this out in time for Derby next week.

Any views on how we should shore up the defence?

Not the worst idea in the worst idea in the world but i would hardly describe Clarke's ball distrtibution as being 'good'

Get Sodje back & get an central midfielder on loan & play Harrold or Rickett up front, that might do the trick, oh and put Hooper on the wings, Southend was more a theat going forward with Hooper in the team.

We are leaking 2 goal a game & it not good enough, its don't help when Paynter cannot hit an barn door at the moment, we have to win 3-2 every game but it impossible to do that. Like I say, we need an change at the back & up front.

My thoughts exactly, a defensive midfielder isn't going to solve our main problem. Every time the ball goes into the box I worry at the moment. Seems to be a lack of organisation.

which, i suspect, was one reason for keeping Spinner around in the squad. someone in the back 5 (including Flavs) needs to have a very clear responsibility for organising the team at set-pieces, we seem to be lacking a bit in that front at the moment. generally speaking that would be one of the CB's, but from what I've seen it's not something that comes naturally to Barrett or Clarke. while they're both influential players, in both cases it's more of a leading by example, die-for-the-cause type thing than a cool head in a crisis. while both types are obviously useful, it seems that we're going to get caught out a lot by the greater intelligence of play at Championship level.

It has just occurred to me while reading this thread that I seem to remember we had a lot of balls cleared off the line last year by Che Wilson. While not having a view one way or another about the return of Che, perhaps its this kind of vigilance that needs to be installed in Francis and hammel.
surely the its the duty of the captain to organise the team for set pieces, in which case Maher needs to be a bit more on the ball (pardon the pun!)

I think Sodje would definately help with his presence both in the air and on the deck. Clarke was knocked back in to the stone age by their No9 for the whole 90mins.

4-5-1 ?

Zzzzzzzz.

Less conceded, possibly. Less scored, probably.

Freddy is not the sort of player to have to play up front on his own. Perhaps we could drop him and use Paynter up front  on his own ? (joke!)

Lets not push the panic button yet though.

Who have we conceded 3 against ? :

Norwich, where we scored 3.

Palace away in 5th place and where we had a crazy 10 minutes.

Cardiff at home, who are top of the league.

Sunderland, Away to Liecester, and WBA we only conceded one, plus a couple of clean sheets.

We are going to concede more in this league but going defensive with a formation that doesnt suit our best player isnt the answer I feel.

God knows what the answer is though, I dont think just putting Sodje on in place of one of the others will have the impact some think it will.

Less conceded definitely......Less scored probably

If we have one of the leakiest defences in the Championship then this needs rectifying......I'm not sure where you get 4-5-1 from?

I was thinking along the lines of a midfield diamond with (on current form) Harry up front with Fred.

I also agree with other posts that we must organise ourselves better from set pieces.

Yes if you have a leaky defence it needs sorting but like I said, its not that bad Id want to change the formation.

A defensive midfielder I assumed you meant 4-5-1, if you want it used with 2 up front then that means 4132 which lacks width and adds pressure to the fullbacks.

I could see 4-5-1 being worth a go away as it does give a more solid look, however I dont see how Freddy would play in that.

I agree Fred would be lost playing as a lone striker.

I don't feel comfortable with wholesale changes but the 4-4-2 diamond seems to be the best option at the moment

Afraid I'm not convinced about Francis. He was so at fault with their third goal strolling out when the ball was still live, he had a perfect view along the line and could see Barrett and Clark moving out ahead of him. God if you were playing for the pig and duck on a Sunday morning your team mates would give you a right bollocking. All he had to do was trot and the sheep shagger (their discription not mine)would have been offside.
