2nd Test

We have won the toss and elected to bat

Still cannot believe Panesar isn't playing especially as Warne seems to be getting plenty of turn on the first morning

138-2.

Slow going, but I think the key is to wear down the Australian 4-man attack. McGrath has probably only 6 overs left in him today.

224-3, Pietersen has been taking Warne on - has been great viewing this morning, pleased I got up at 5.30am to catch the whole final session. Collingwood is 78 not out and Pietersen 40 not out.

Now let's keep this up until tomorrow evening

So, what's the story with Glenda?  Is he not 100% fit?  If so, we need to go after him, big time.  Ultimately, he with the ball and Ponting with the bat (*) are the main differences between the sides.  With an unfit Glenda, we have a chance.

Great effort by Colly & KP.  Oh, and what in God's good earth is up with Strauss at the moment... yet another wicket tossed away.

(*Some sobering reading for you... without looking, you have guess what Punter's average is in the seven tests he has played this year... PM me if you want the answer)

Was also up at 5.30 to watch the final session. Good to watch. Much better than the first 2 by the sounds of it. The key is to bat for most of the 2nd day and tire out the Aussies in the field - after all there's a reason they didn't enforce the follow on in the 1st test, to give their players a rest.

Oh, and a slice of humble pie for me, please. Having slated Fletcher over his treatment of Jimmy Anderson to date, I have to say that deep down I am rather impressed that Fletcher has had the courage of his convictions and stuck with Jimmy for this Test match. Here's hope it gives Jimmy the morale boost he so desperately needed after events in Brisbane.

Matt

P.S. Oh, and Cousin Weir... I'd just like to say a big

to you too...

98.something or other this calender year.

Strauss seems to be like me when it comes to anything other than a pull or a hook shot - fecking useless. Three times he's gone cheap due to a stupid shot.

Ponting is averaging something like 116.

Mind you Mohammed Yousef is averaging something similar and England beat his Pakistan team 3-0.

You don't have to attack McGrath, he can only bowl 18 overs in a day. See him off. Warne is the player England need to score off. If we can force Warne out of the attack they have to turn to players like Michael Clarke to bowl.

Last night England reaped the benefit of that 4th day in Brisbane when we kept them out in the field. With back to back tests, it was critical that we tired them out and boosted our confidence.

Tomorrow/tonight (whenever it is) we need to take advantage of this situation and look to double our score.

Decent effort by England, the trick now is to keep the Aussies in the field for the best part of tomorrow, and maybe let them have a very uncomfortable 45 minutes at the end of the day.

Close... 105.8. Yousuf is 99.33 this year - but over 11 Tests rather than Ponting's 7 Tests.

Question is: what sort of score do we need to get them properly on the back foot? You sense that 450 is probably the target; whether we make that target is down in no small measure to the current pair, and how long they last tomorrow morning...

They were saying 500odd in the drinks break before Strauss got caught - I stopped listening after that. Bit difficult to stay up all night reading with the cricket on the radio.

Hopefully we will kick on big time tonight and build a really good score, which will put the Aussie batsmen under loads of pressure

McGrath's first over on and KP hits 3 boundaries! 300 up, partnership at 130+, both players looking steady. Let's hope these two can see it through to luncheon.

Ton up for KP, a great innings and partnership. Time to hit the sack and concentrate on tomorrow's game.

551/6 dec - great stuff from England.

Langer is out, I hope we can roll over Ponting before stumps, that would be a great first couple of days.
