2nd goal

Just saw the goals from saturday and i thought that the second goal was scored from the area that you would expect the keeper to be coming out for. I'm sure darryl would have recieved critisism for not getting it but no one seems to have picked up on it.

SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
What have you started?

:thump:

Nobody would expect the goalkeeper to be rushing some 12 yards out of his area through a ruck of players to claim such a ball.

Richards let Taylor get in front of him aswell so he couldn't make a decent challenge, shocking goal all round really.

I blame Richards and Clarke (LEON) for the goal really - Both are big men who should have cut it out....

As Ive said all along Flahavan has been made a scapegoat for last season and our poor start and that too much was made of Collis coming into the side.

Collis has done well and I dont see any reason at present why he shouldnt keep the shirt but I agree that if Flahavan had conceded some of the same goals his height/lack of command would have been used as a reason.

The other reason was the Barrett/Clarke pairing yet when this has been changed and Collis is in we still concede two set pieces.

Unfortunately theres no simple change to be made and as confidence grows we will see a continuing improvement whoever is in goal.

Flahavan was criticised for his lack of command of his 6 yard box, neither cross was inside the 6 yard box.

Having looked at the highlights, it looks like Peter Clarke lost his man for the first goal, although Maher might have been quicker to it and cut it out. The second goal Leon Clarke went for a header but missed it and Richards seemed to be on his heels (thinking Clarke would clear) and allowed Taylor to nod it on.

No way in a million years should the keeper have been trying to get that cross. Fair enough if the ball had travelled 50-60 yards to get there a la Brighton, but not from a free-kick fizzed in from just outside the penalty area. Just another Darryl lover trying to justify his shortcomings (pun fully intended).

Indeed - not charging through a penalty area full of players to claim the ball 12 yards from the goal is hardly bad command of the area. He would have stood very little chance of claiming it, then everyone would have been on his back for making a rash decision if it had still been a goal!

what it might suggest is that problems at the back were not down to the goalkeeping but to lack of leadership in the back 4 -

also got to point a finger at the coaching - this was going on last season as well

i may have worded what i said wrongly, i suppose what i really meant was that Flavs would have been critisised for not claiming that (by some). If you look the second goal was headed on the six yard box and only richards is between collis and the ball. I'm not saying the goal was his fault just pointing out how flavs was always quick to be made a scapegoat ( although instances like Brighton were justified)

P.S Billericay Blue i prefer to see collis in goal than darryl as i feel he is a more alround keeper

Glad to hear it :)

I don't think Darryl would have got slated for not coming to claim it, as it came in with far too much pace, from far to close. It's the 40-50 yard free-kicks, plus the corners and free-kicks that are in our 6 yard box, that Darryl (or any keeper worth his salt) should be looking to claim, but sadly he doesn't have the ability and/or attributes to do so.

All of the above comments are true, I dont hold Collis responsible for the goals.

However Josh is right, whilst everyone here is saying a keeper shouldnt be expected to get those Flahavan would have been criticised for being too short/not commanding enough still.

Billiericay blues comments above are typical, apparently there was a ball floated 60 yards he should have got, just watching the replay the guy was 35 yards out maximum.

Ok, I've watched it again and it's probably about 45 yards out, but it is still a ball that is headed 8 yards out that he should have claimed. Oh, and if you read my comments properly, you'll see that I would not have expected Darryl to come for the 2nd goal on Saturday.
