22 Man Brawl Stops Essex Game

Suffolk Shrimper In Dorset

at Chelmsford v Braintree in the local cup compo.

City 2-0 down in front of 1,500 fans, then it all sparks off.

Player fight, not fans. Ref got cheesed off and abandoned things.

Ho hum.

Anyone experience something similar before?

I know they just got a new ground but ho come they are still managing to attract good crowds for that level, dont get me wrong its good to see local teams doing well but it dont make sense, they get bigger crowds then canvey

They keep getting aggro down there, they had a pitch invasion in the last round! Chelmsford seem to have attracted a lot of support back - but let's face it, even Hornchurch are a bigger club than Canvey!

The only time I've seen something like that before was when we had a 22-man brawl in one of my Sunday League team's cup games. The ref abandoned it at 2-1 (we were winning) and the league council kicked us both out the cup.

If I'd paid to get in then that wold have really pi$$ed me off. Interesting to see what the Essex FA does about it, though - I don't think 65mins is enough to ket the result stand but if the breawl were Chelmsford's fault then they should be held accountable somehow.

The number of stories regarding how this started has been varied to say the least. From my view right over the side of the pitch it was impossible to say, but what is for sure is that it was a free for all, and involved far more than the 22 players.

There is no rule regarding a stipulated time a match should last prior to abandonment for the result to stand in our (Essex FA) rules, but we'll have to wait and see how both Clubs respond to their charges.

Meanwhile, the 'other' semi-final' between Waltham Forest and Heybridge Swifts still goes ahead this Tuesday (7th).

Because Chelmsford City are a big Club!

Prior to being kicked out of their old New Writtle Street ground in 1997, City often attracted crowds over 1,000 and prior to that averaged around 5-6,000 for many, many years.

They have applied - but just failed - for election to the Football League on no fewer than 22 occassions (only Yeovil applied more times) and it is to the amazement of many people how they never made it into the Football League.

Comparing them to a miniscule Club like Canvey is laughable!
