1st black player to play for SUFC

The Trust have had an enquiry from someone doing research into the first black player at each of the current 92, can anyone help establish who this might have been - Cadette, or earlier?

Must be Cadette .

Micky Welch from Grays was on our books, but I don't know if he made the first team.

I would agree, unless Shane Westley counts, but I would say not.

If not, definitely Richard Cadette.

Surely we must of had a black player prior to Cadette? I would be amazed if it was him. That was 1986!

I looked through all the team photos in my copy of 'Southend United - Official History' and couldn't see any before that season in the team photos.

The answer then was Mickey Welch in 1985.

There was a youngster with the surname Partridge who played for the reserves in the early 60s. Got a feeling he came from or went to Portsmouth.

The only Adam Locke I'm aware of joined the club in 1990, 5 years after Welch and Cadette.

Yes.from Pompey-he was quite a speedy left-winger- never made the first team but would have been on a 7-man bench but there were no subs in those days.

It would be Gridelet at the top, and the oil....it was mad.... Tilly liked a tan too.
