Heading abroad - former Southend United midfielder Wes Fonguck (Image: Alan Stanford)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

FORMER Southend United midfielder Wes Fonguck is to spend the next 11 months playing in America.

Fonguck joined Ebbsfleet United in the summer after leaving the Shrimpers.

But the Kent club have now confirmed Fonguck is heading abroad to continue his career.

A post on Ebbsfleet's Twitter account confirmed: "Midfielder Wes Fonguck will head out on loan for a 11-month period to take up a playing opportunity in the United States.

"The 27-year-old arrived at the Kuflink Stadium in the summer from Southend United on a two-year contract and has featured 16 times for the Fleet with one goal which came in the match at Forest Green Rovers.

"Everyone at the Fleet wishes Wes the very best for a successful stay in the United States."

Fonguck scored five goals in 78 appearances with Blues.

Underrated here at SUFC because he wasn’t another workhorse defensive midfielder that we seem to be obsessed with.

People disliked him because he ‘didn’t work hard enough’ but the midfield has never looked the same since.

Not saying Wes is anywhere near the best we could get, but at least he was a dynamic player who could create on his day, there seems to be little tolerance for such players anymore.

Wes is a Zone conundrum.
I have never understood the love affair with a player who did his best, but was found wanting.
The alarm bells rang after we signed him and Barnet fans came on here asking who his agent was so they could use his/her services!
Ebbsfleet soon tired of him, and according to the stats link added, he managed an average of 47 minutes per game over the 16 he played.
Both Fleet and us surely rumbled him.
This is where I'm meant to wish him well in the States, but am keener to meet his agent, lol!

Found wanting? Bloody hell.

I couldn’t give a toss about Barnet or Ebbsfleet. The fact is, we have yet to find any sort of upgrade on him.

Wes played with positivity, was able to find space in a way that no midfielder in our current squad has done this season and had a fantastic understanding with Bridge, whether making decoy runs, running ahead of Bridge or playing one-twos/back heels with him. The two of them were unplayable at times.

To give you three examples, watch the highlights of our 3-0 win at Solihull last season, the pass he played for Sandat against Barnet, which the latter sadly missed and of course his winning goal against Altrincham at home.

In a tiny squad last season Wes played a significant part. This season fans and even Maher have called for more bravery on the ball. That was Wes last season. Sometimes it didn’t work and sometimes it confused our players rather than the opposition but the fact is the balance of our midfield has weakened on the left side. I thought Moncur would be a decent upgrade but sadly not.
