Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation Transfer Thread - Summer 2025 Edition.

Transfer news
Or even as an outside bet McCullum- not sure that idea is wiped from the whiteboard .,?

As of just a few months ago, that name certainly hadn’t been wiped off.

No idea if its still there now, though.

At 33 & coming off the back of an injury - from which he still hasn’t recovered from - I think PM would be a huge risk for the wages.

Early days but the names being mentioned won't touch the sides of the extra 30 odd points required to catch up with Barnet and Yorks points totals last season. I'm ambivalent about Bonne signing until I hear Dackers or a bloke from a bottom half NLS side as the alternative. Jeez. Let's get Bonne in.

The funny thing about being 30 points behind, is the very small margins and variables.

30 points is only 10 wins. A minimum of 10 extra goals needed.

A decent finisher up front and a powerhouse at the back, could feasibly earn that.

How many games did we lose/draw after having umpteen chances to put the game to bed, before a defensive clanger cost us?

Very fine margins.

Not to be a pedant, but those numbers aren't quite right.

30 extra points is 10 losses turning to 10 wins (gaining 3 points per game). Assuming all losses were by 1 goal, that's 2 goals required, so a minimum of 20 extra goals.

30 extra points could be 15 draws turned into 15 wins (gaining 2 points per game). In that scenario it would be 15 extra goals.

Unfortunately we won't get to pick which exact games the extra goals (if any) come in, so it's more likely we'd need 25-30 extra net goals (more scored or less conceded) to be challenging at the top.

We've got the basis of a good team, but we're blunt up top. That's not to say all our current strikers are worthless but the combinations aren't right yet.

If we add a strong CB and can solve the gap between a workhorse midfield and hitting the back of the net (which KAF and LCP are already starting to in their part of that problem) then all of a sudden the whole team look better.

Anyone who's played the game knows if you have 8 good players but a few below par, if you swap the below par for above average your whole team (including the 8 you've kept) suddenly look much better. That was the basis of Tilly's success (take Eastwood/Barrett/Gower out and you're left with a pretty average side).

So it's not insurmountable with 3 quality signings plus some squad competition, but naturally finding the next Eastwood/Barrett/Gower is far easier said than done, so not quite as fine margins as your calculation makes out.

Problem is, and I've said this before, people have no knowledge of players in this league, above, or below us, and are hellbent stuck on old players 😂
Cardwell being a prime example. Not prolific before, unlikely to be prolific if he returned. We can do better and I’m very confident we will. Lose opportunities to league opposition is inevitable as is losing players to clubs in this league offering higher wages. I can live with that, seems some others are still expecting spend at all costs despite recent history and the very clearly stated intentions of COSU.

Sorry GBJ. Making up 10 wins isn’t 10 goals turning 10 matches into wins. It’s turning 10 losses into wins. A minimum 20 goals extra. I think we’re solid play offs but miles off automatic or even top 3.

Sorry GBJ. 10 goals is the minimum to turn 10 draws into wins (20 points). 30 points requires 10 losses turned into wins and a minimum 20 goals. I think we're miles off automatics but a solid 4,5,6,7 play off team. It is early days but something more exciting needs to happen in the transfer market than is being discussed to compete right at the top. Sounds like we're seeking another solid season and maybe sneaking in if the NLS and N are where we're shopping.

EDIT. Just seen someone has already pointed out the maths issue.

I’m not sure targeting the likes of Periera & Cashman is “seeking another solid season”…

Just Google searched Dackers as wanted to know how old he is... sounds like he'd fit in well among our other strikers 😶

Was in 2211 minutes which is 24.5 full games equivalent. Look short term Spasov and Dackers won’t be meeting the objective of improving on what we have. They may well provide something different and for the future.

I think many are hoping for signing that will day one improve the team on the pitch to look further up the table.

I think we will get a mix of the two- patience I guess

Is this suggesting we are going to be aiming for the type of players that are at the top of their game and can push us more towards the top than 'unpolished gems'? Cashman and Perieira would have been class but can see next on the list becoming more of unknowns.

Time will tell.

I won’t reveal anything I’m not allowed to.

We’ve seen links to four players this summer on social media. Periera, Cashman, Spasov & Kawa. Kawa wasn’t under serious consideration, but just using that model. Two top players, two “rough diamonds”.

Ultimately, any signing made is a gamble and never a guarantee.

I'd certainly take someone the calibre of Cardwell, who wasn't a big name signing or someone with a standout track record, but for me he looked like he had everything to succeed from day one.

My knowledge of the lower leagues is abysmal though, so whether that sort of striker is out there I wouldn't be able to tell you.

You`ve got to get them. It would have been a statement of intent if we signed both of these players. We are going down the list and getting 3rd and fourth choices.

Of course you have. But if we were just looking for another “solid season” we wouldn’t even be targeting them.

Are we? We know we have missed out on Cashman. Spasov was a top target for us.

We will always miss out on targets, so will 99% of football clubs this season. Even Man City, with all their money, have missed out on Wirtz for example.

Why is shopping in the NLS N/S showing a lack of ambition?

Was Tilly showing a lack of ambition when he targeted Freddy Eastwood?

Was Sturrock showing a lack of ambition when he picked up Ryan Hall?

Was Maher showing a lack of ambition when he signed Gus Scott-Morriss?

How about Leon Parillon?

And Kensdale and Cardwell?

They were all signed from NLN/S clubs.

Should Maher instead be targeting more players like Moncur, Bonne and Walker signed from L1/L2?

People said that about Eastwood. They expected him to be Tes Bramble's backup.
