I agree with this post if we fail next year, and definitely the year after. But with the dodgy pre season and the mess at the start of this season and what happened last season they was almost a write off.Yeah, sure. A proper football club would be in the football league. We need to straighten out our priorities.
I don't understand why GW didn't come on, push Gus up front and he could have been backwards and forwards with fresh legs.Oldham used 6 subs, including subbing a sub who'd only been on the pitch around 40mins.
We used 5
I’d strongly recommend watching the first 21 minutes from the CEO Forum held in March which covers specifically what the 5 Year Plan entails and the foundations that underpin it (spoiler: it does include promotion to the EFL).It was a great display. Thanks KM & SUFCFC but's let's not forget it's time for the "money men" (as I privately call the COSU) to splash the cash and properlly replace the 2 key players who left last August and obviously haven't been properly replaced. No idea what the so-called 5 year plan entails but it must include promotion to the EFL asap .As Barnet & Oldham have shown that takes dosh.
I agree with all you said, save for their last goal. There was nothing ruthless about it. A sheer fluke. It was a cross, and the guy got lucky.Ok so have deliberately left it til this morning to post as was quite tipsy and deflated by the time I arrived home.
That was gutting, but the overwhelming thing I feel is pride in Kev and the lads, we were always underdogs going into the playoffs on account of finishing 7th but performed extremely well to see off Rochdale and FGR.
We took Oldham right to the wire but ultimately they had that touch more big game experience and were ruthless taking those two chances and we weren’t at the very end when frustratingly, we couldn’t bury it to take them to pens. Sums up a lot of games this season.
Spoke to a couple of Oldham fans afterwards who praised our support, they were good natured and I wished them well. They felt they’d struggle in L2, I think they’ll be well clear of bottom 2. They really need to get another promotion place sorted from NL .. aargh can’t believe we’re here another season.
Still, we go again. Have a great summer all and see you in August with renewed hopes & some new faces in the squad (let’s hope!). To our current squad, you’ve been amazing and thanks for your efforts.
Oh was great yesterday seeing so many faces I knew - seemed like all of Southend was there!
I think Carlisle will, as is the norm, find the NL a bit of a shock. Not much between us and FGR and don’t think that will change next year. I think whether top spot is in the mix will depend on how close we get to York - an obvious way of closing the gap would be a prolific goalscorer- easier said than doneWas a great day out. Loved Boxpark and Wembley, great atmosphere.
Shame about the result but it wasn’t to be. I think the biggest disappointment is not that we are not going up, but that we are stuck in a terrible league with poor referees and some pretty bang average clubs for another year.
Id love to be positive but with two up and York Carlisle FGR spending big, I struggle to see how we could go up automatically.
I think people are probably slightly overreacting on this thread, we have a good squad since January in the form table we’ve done well. We probably do need a proven goalscorer and to upgrade some positions slightly.
End of the day Oldham brought on James Norwood while we brought on Josh Walker and Bonne. You can see why they won the game in the end.

The main thing re reserve right back was tired legs, you could see many of our guys were blowing out their backsides. Extra energy was needed at that time, and having Gus stand in their box waiting for the ball, rather than having to get back and defend. Sometimes you need to throw the kitchen sink at it, not just shout at an already knackered player to do more..Okay, with a bit more time to reflect and think, here are my ratings:
Hayes 6 One good save, one goal I think he could've done better with. Unfortunate with Garner's penalty as it was very saveable if he'd gone the other way.
GSM 7 Seems a weird thing to say, but think I was disappointed with Gus perhaps more than anyone else in that he was below his usual level (and that's given that he got two assists). No criticising his work rate or determination, but his deliveries into the box were poor and he seemed to get caught out between going forward and tracking back. A friend who came to watch and doesn't usually asked why Kev kept the right-back on when he was having such a nightmare. No complaints as hopefully that will have put off anyone scouting him enough to let us keep him.
Taylor 9 Genuinely hard to think of a more committed performance from an SUFC player since the likes of Timlin in the last play-off push. Won everything, didn't hold back, and his fitness levels after playing almost every game all season were incredible.
Goodliffe 6 He was winning a lot in the air, but I think he was running on fumes by the end of the 90 and we saw the consequence of that in ET. He looked like he'd pulled something against Forest Green late on too, so I wonder if he's not fully fit, or just that having barely played until he came here, playing 120 minutes three weeks in a row was too much.
Ralph 8 A leader in this side and defended well throughout, couldn't ask much more from him than what he gave us. Whereas Taylor might have been a bit rash at times diving in and Goodliffe was lacking composure, Ralph did that well.
Bridge 6 If only we'd had the Bridge of a couple of years ago. Sadly he has lost that edge of pace which allows him to beat his man. He worked his socks off and contributed, but that cutting edge of getting past his man was missing again.
Miley 6 That early yellow card was really silly and I think influenced his game from then on out. I've liked his impact off the bench in recent weeks, but understood why Kev went with him as he seemed perfectly suited to this kind of battle.
Husin 7 Effective and looked to get the ball forward when he could, more so than usual even, and was key to controlling the tempo particularly in the first half. He was left with a lot of defensive duties to handle on his own with KAF and Coker.
KAF 8 Thought he was better against Rochdale and Forest Green, but still worked tirelessly, I think you could just see him tire a little more after the last two weeks and his impact waned in extra-time.
Hopper 6 Got stuck into the physical battle, but almost became too involved with it as he was going down every time and rarely winning it. I think he's useful, but I'm not sure he's what we need if we want a fixed target man like that in that role.
Kendall 7 Didn't stop running for the first 60 minutes, forced the goal well, and continues to show up in the big games. Without much service and chasing scraps, he did a reasonable job.
Subs
Parillon 7 I think the nerves got to him a little, particularly early on, and he grew into the game and took his goal very well. He brings that edge which Bridge is lacking, though I'm not convinced he's a natural fit for the LWB role.
Bonne 5 This was more like the Bonne of the first few months of his time here, where he seemed to chase dead ends but without all that much commitment, and slipped when the chance fell his way. I've really liked him in the past couple of months, but this was possibly his least impactful game in some time.
Coker 7 I thought he added much-needed energy to the midfield, and was much more forward-thinking than Miley had been. With KAF given more licence he was a little more tied up, but did his job well.
Walker 6 Yes, he could've handled his chance better, but he did almost create that from nothing all by himself. He chased things down well and caused them problems, but I just can't remember the last time I got excited when he got on the ball in the final third.
Gubbins 5 You can understand a player whose played 120 minutes looking for the easy pass out of pure exhaustion, but when you've been thrown on to chase the lead with 10 minutes to go, I couldn't understand that 90% of his passes were sideways or backwards.
And additionally:
Kev 7 I think it's hard to pin anything here on him. Could Gubbins have come on a bit earlier? Maybe, but then you're disrupting a backline which had looked very solid in the first half of ET, and there was no time to react after the first goal. Should Coker have started? Maybe, but he could easily have seen the midfield overrun. If the biggest criticism anyone on here can have is that we should've thrown our reserve right-back on out of desperation for the final 5 minutes, I think it shows that Kev did a good job. I don't think we sat back and shut up shop at any time to invite pressure, and that's commendable, and the mistakes were individual errors, not necessarily from being too exposed by the system or the tactics.
Fans 8 The tifo was superb, the main supporters section behind the goal too, though there's always that element on these "big day out" games that you end up with a bunch of people coming to their first game in 10 years who don't know any of the songs, etc. Even so, there was a great atmosphere from start to finish, and it was superb to see so many staying to applaud the boys at the end as they deserved.
I think it's a difficult balancing act for the COSU members, though. I have the impression, without wishing to be disparaging of them, that they are not too high up in the rich list of global wealth, even collectively, and certainly not in the same league as the likes of Ryan Reynolds or Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The financial mess bequeathed to them by Ron Martin when they purchased the club continues to be a draw on their financial resources. To maintain regular cash flow into the club they need to get as many bums on seats at Roots Hall as possible. Providing the owners of those bums with a team that wins matches and gets promoted up the leagues is, as you rightly imply, essential but so is providing them with an attractive and safe environment in which to watch that team. At this stage the financial investment in both aspects is speculative. The decades of neglect of the Roots Hall ground (that COSU doesn't even own yet!) requires cash to keep it compliant with licensing regulations as a bare minimum. Balancing a tight budget between how much to invest in the team and how much to invest in the real estate is problematic. I think we have both been supporters long enough to remember the confrontation between David Webb (with his senior players) and Vic Jobson over investment in the team to get promotion to the old Football League Division 1 (now Premier League) in the 1990s. Vic refused and we subsequently dropped down the divisions again. Ron Martin spent money that he didn't have and almost destroyed the club. COSU somehow have to find a middle way between those two unsuccessful approaches. It was a great display.
No but they kept going forward and in effect made their own luck, just 2 mins after their 2nd. We were tiring badly at that point and they knew it. They then saw out the game very professionally.I agree with all you said, save for their last goal. There was nothing ruthless about it. A sheer fluke. It was a cross, and the guy got lucky.
Agreed. Also should be noted that their second and third goals were scored by subs, just as we benefited from our subs v RochdaleLuckily he is a UEFA Pro Licence qualified coach with almost 30 years experience inside the game as a player, manager and coach but yes, Kev logs in to SZ to read a load of rubbish about how we should "play forwards more" and just "take the handbrake off".
Sometimes, moments in games go the way of the other team. It is not always the manager's fault.
