Post-Match Thread and Ratings Forest Green 2-2 Southend United..We win on Penalites 4-2

We were the better team in the first half by a distance. Actually until we scored.

They maybe edged it after that to full time.

They were the better team in extra time. I felt our last extra time maybe caught up with us, and cards + odesebe were excellent.

I’d say over 90 mins we deserved to win. Over 120 maybe a draw was fair. That said - hayes had 2 shots on target, both straight at him and they somehow both went in. I’m just relieved that the local rugby club helped them with penalty practice.

But that goal by bridge. What a finish lad.

I have to say that with 4 minutes of extra time left and 2-1 down I thought for the first time that we'd run our race.

However even after our first penalty had been saved I still felt we would do it. And when the BBC Radio commentator said Hayes was behind the goal supping on his water bottle memories tumbled back to Dan Bentley and his antics in the Wycombe Wanderers shoot out.

At that point in my mind it was never in doubt.
I had a friend over to watch with me and the family.

As one of their players ran up for his penalty my friend said, "go on, over the bar", and guess what?

Yeah, you all guessed!

Wow! I thought it was over at 2-1 but we never give up and what a time for Bridge to score his first goal from open play this season. Another at Wembley would be great Jack 😂

I always think taking the first pen is an advantage, and after Walkers poor miss everyone else stepped up with good efforts. Bonne was perhaps a little lucky, he looked like he thought it was going to bounce out rather than in. A word for Gubbins, I’ve been very critical of him and groaned when I saw he was taking a pen, but no one was saving that.

I’m really excited for another Wembley visit and fingers crossed we can overcome Oldham and get back to where we belong.
